Before signing up for any Denton Animal Services opportunities/shifts, please complete your background check and attend a volunteer orientation. Email jenny.mcgee@cityofdenton.com for details.
If you’ve been notified that your background check is complete and this is your first time volunteering, please sign up for an orientation shift. During orientation, we will:
- Review the volunteer handbook
- Give you a tour of the shelter
- Introduce basic operations
- Discuss your goals and next steps

Parking: Volunteers should park in the designated lot on the side of the building near the dog park and trails. Handicapped parking is available in any marked space for easier access.
Dress Code
Please dress comfortably and appropriately for safety and professionalism.
What to Wear:
- Closed-toe, slip-resistant shoes
- Comfortable clothes you don’t mind getting dirty
What NOT to Wear:
- Open-toe or backless shoes (flip-flops, sandals, Crocs)
- Clothing with images or text referencing:
- Drugs
- Alcohol
- Politics
- Adult themes
What to Bring
- Minimal personal items (storage space is limited)
- Your phone or calendar for scheduling one-on-one animal handling training
