Since 2007, Keep Denton Beautiful has received grant funding to install cigarette receptacles and educate residents about America's #1 most littered item - the cigarette butt.
Since 2018, KDB has been recycling the cigarette butts with help from volunteers. We have removed over 125,000 cigarette butts from Quakertown Park, Fry Street, and Downtown Denton. Because cigarette butts are made from cellulose acetate aka PLASTIC, all the butts removed are recycled with a company called Terracycle.
Volunteers help to survey the receptacle areas for cigarette butts to help track how the program is helping and to identify new locations for receptacles. Volunteers also help to empty receptacles and pick up cigarette butts to send to Terracyle for recycling.
Keep Denton Beautiful provides all cleanup supplies such as trach bags, pickup sticks and gloves for volunteers.
